Description :

A Christian cathedral with a cruciform (cross-like) plan and a rounded apse, with rich sculptural decoration (especially on the west side, or facade) and stained glass, considered one of the finest French examples of Gothic architecture.  The 12th century building replaced a Romanesque basilica on the same site which was destroyed by fire (fire damaged the current building as well in 1194).  The spire on the south side of the west facade is dated to the 1140s and has a plain pyramid shape; the spire on the north side of the west facade is an early 16th century Flamboyant addition to the old tower.  Flying buttresses surround the structure and the nave floor is decorated with a labyrinth pavement.

Notes :

Chartres Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  A Marian pilgrimage site (especially popular in the 12th century), the cathedral houses a relic of Mary's tunic, the Sancta Camisa, which miraculously survived the fire in 1194 that destroyed all but the west facade.   The sculptural program is very complex and includes several centuries of work.
