Description :

Buddhist temple in the Sakyo ward of Kyoto, Japan. Retirement villa and garden planned by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1460), which became a Buddhist temple after his death in 1490.  Main temple (Kannon) begun in 1480 and was to have been covered in silver, prompting the popular name Ginkakuji (Silver Temple). The complex was altered in the 17th century.  A large treasure pond with two islands acts as a reflecting pond for the pavilion.  The largest garden in the complex is a  karaesanisui garden (dry garden) called Ginshaden or the Sea of Silver Sand, which features a peculiar cone of gravel called Kogetsudai, or Moon-viewing Platform.
