Description :
|
This Beguine convent, founded in c 1230, first included the district near the church. In the 17C it was extended, covering an impressive area of approx. 7ha/15 acres. It is the largest Beguine convent in Belgium. The university bought it in 1962 and restored it as closely as possible to its original state. The houses have since provided accommodation for students and lecturers. The last nun died in 1988. This is a picturesque group of buildings, crisscrossed by two arms of the Dijle and enclosed by a curved brick wall. The houses were also built of brick. They have small arched doorways and some of them, like the houses in the Spanish district, have quaint alcoves decorated with statues. Several of the dwellings have gardens.
