Notes :

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Parthenon was used as a treasury as well as a temple in Classical times.  In the 6th Century it was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin.  During the Ottoman Empire, the building was a mosque, and then was used to store ammunition, which was ignited and destroyed the building in 1687.
